Tucked away in the middle of the South China Sea is a secret paradise familiar only to a handful of locals. A 20-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu will get you to a sea-horsed shaped island, known to locals as Pulau Dinawan. It is the ultimate eco-adventure destination. Pulau Dinawan is also home to the Ara Dinawan Research Education Conservation Centre (ADRECC). ADRECC is an environmental marine conservation organisation consisting of affordable accommodation, an educational section, research, work station and dive centre.
Its Board of Directors are experienced scuba divers, nature lovers with the same mission of contributing and preserving the ocean’s marine life and green environment for our future generations. Besides organising conservation projects on the island, ADRECC is also dedicated to assisting in community projects, awareness talks, and environmental education. Among their main focus on marine conservation are coral rehabilitation, sea turtle hatchery, seagrass and seaweed farming, reef restoration and many others. By restoring habitats damaged by tourism and unregulated fishing activities like fishing bombing, and providing an alternative livelihood to local fishermen, ADRECC aim to conserve and enhance biodiversity and ecosystems. Ultimately striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 14: Life Below Water, Goal 15: Life on Land, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Efforts on research are carried out on sharks, sea turtles, sea grass and marine animals. In regards to flora and fauna on the island, avid bird watchers can hope to spot oriental hornbills among many other species that are yet to be identified. For a global impact, the centre aims to educate visitors and locals about the importance of environmental conservation.
You can now experience a night on the island in their resort that is currently available for a trial basis. At an affordable price, you can connect with nature while also be actively involved in their conservation efforts. ADRECC is indeed a place to go to experience the luxury of peace and in-depth knowledge of environmental sustainability.
